infiniti q60 red sport review

The Infiniti Q60 was launched back in 2013 replacing the automaker’s popular G-Series coupe and convertible models. The first-generation model was sold from 2013 to 2016, while the Q60 Red Sport 400 edition was introduced with the second-generation model, which was launched in 2016 North American International Auto Show.

The latest 2018 Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400 coupe instantly caught our attention thanks to its sexy design and a potent 400 horsepower engine.  In our in-depth review of the Q60 Red Sport, we analyze if it is truly as good as Infiniti hypes it up as.

Driving Dynamics

Just to be clear, the Infiniti Q60’s base model is equipped with a 2.0L turbocharged I-4 engine borrowed from Mercedes-Benz and it produces 208 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft of torque.  On the other hand, this powerful Red Sport 400 model is powered by a Nissan sourced 3.0L twin-turbocharged V6 engine pumping out a mighty 400 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft of torque.  We don’t’ see too many models these days offering a horsepower variance of nearly 100% from base to top trim.  Well, except for cars like the Dodge Charger with radical top-end models, stretching the model’s horsepower range from 292 to 707 HP.  The Q60’s engine is paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission, which works like a charm, switching gears intelligently to ensure maximum acceleration.

The engine is crafted from lightweight aluminum material, however there is no denying that at 4,024 pounds, the overall curb weight of the Q60 Red Sport is a little on the pudgy side.

Design and Aerodynamics

One of the most unique components we found in the 2018 Q60 Red Sport 400 is the ‘Active Grille Shutter’, which ensures the engine stays cool and improves the overall aerodynamics of the car. Under normal conditions, the shutter remains closed, but at higher speeds it opens automatically. Despite being a fairly heavy car, the Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400’s drag coefficient measures at 0.28, enabling it to stay stable even at high speeds and crosswind conditions.

In terms of the design, the 2018 Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400 features a bold and muscular persona, thanks to the wider stance and deep exterior curves.  The upgraded wheels on the Q60 Red Sport not only add style, but also improve its handling.

Four Drivetrain Modes

The 2018 Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400 boasts an impressive drive mode selector with six available options: Customize, Standard, Snow, Eco, Sport and Sport+. Each mode adjusts the car’s throttle response, suspension, steering response for an ideal drive on a specific terrain. You’ll feel a noticeable change in driving dynamics in switching from one mode to another. For instance, the standard mode renders a smooth and comfortable drive, ideal for highway cruising or giving your passengers a comfortable ride. Switching to Sport mode, you’ll experience a significant difference in the transmission.  This mode keeps delays between shifts to a minimum, plus the steering wheel will feel lighter, making maneuvering around the twistys easier.

If you are focused on engine efficiency, then you’ll want to opt for ECO mode, which will also reduce the acceleration.

Performance Statistics and Fuel Consumption

On a drag strip, the 2018 Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400 can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in only 5.0 seconds on its way to a 155 mph top speed (limited by Infiniti’s lawyers). The luxury coupe does not do too bad in the fuel efficiency department either with a 19/26 City/Highway MPG rating.

Interior Comfort

The cabin is impressively equipped with an array of the latest advanced tech goodies. The high-quality leather upholstery with lumbar, lateral and thigh support ensures maximum comfort during the long drives. The Q60’s cabin also features ‘Active Noise Cancellation’ technology, will enhance the driving experience for many, unless you want to hear more of the engine– like us.

The Infiniti InTouch infotainment system is used to control almost anything inside the car including temperature, audio settings and more. Also, the Bose premium sound system won’t disappoint audiophiles.

Safety Features

The 2018 Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400 renders a number of top-class safety features.  Some of the highlights include Around View® Monitor, Intelligent Cruise Control with Distance Control Assist, Forward Emergency Braking with pedestrian detection, Lane Departure Prevention, Blind Spot Intervention and Backup Collision Intervention.

Conclusion and Pricing

The 2018 Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400 is an all-rounder luxury coupe, boasting a number of high-end amenities coupled with an enthusiastic power-plant. It’s available in two versions – a rear wheel drive which starts at $51,300, while the AWD model will set you back $53,300.  We wish the Q60 would shed some pounds to improve upon its 0-60 and handling. Nevertheless, overall the Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400 lives up to the hype.  If you’re in the market for a luxury sports coupe, it’s still a lot of car for the money and one you should keep on your short list.
