In 2011, the Italian automaker introduced the first Lamborghini Aventador replacing the Murciélago housing a V12 engine capable of delivering 690 bhp. Although I cannot think of any reason why Lamborghini felt the need to upgrade its performance over the years, yet the latest 2018 Lamborghini Aventador S came with a highly re-engineered and optimized powertrain rendering phenomenal performance.

The new Lamborghini Aventador S was first showcased in December 2016 at Sant’Agata Bolognese. Talking about the supercar, Automobili Lamborghini Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Stefano Domenicali stated, “The Aventador S is visionary design, cutting-edge technology and driving dynamics in pure harmony, and elevates the concept of super sports cars to a new level.”

Driving Dynamics

As you would expect, the new Lamborghini Aventador S offers some seriously impressive driving dynamics, even when compared to the previous Aventador model.  The 2018 Aventador S boasts the same 6.5L V12 engine as the LP 700-4, but it has been upgraded to pump out 730 horsepower. The most notable changes are the enhanced rear-wheel steering system and quicker steering ratio, which make it easier to maneuver the Aventador S around the corners.

Aerodynamic Efficiency

Overall, the new Aventador S feels much lighter and more powerful, thanks to the improved aerodynamic package and updated exterior components. You might say it looks identical to its predecessor models, but Lambo has in fact added an all new bumper, front splitter, a large rear diffuser, and side air vents. Moreover, the active rear wing can now be adjusted in three positions depending on the speed and the drive mode. All these components are made from high grade carbon fiber improving the airflow and consequently increasing the downforce by 130%.

Four-Selectable Drive Modes:

Talking about the drive modes, the 2018 Lamborghini Aventador S features four selectable drive modes namely Strada, Sport, Corsa and the new EGO. Engage the Strada mode to experience a more smooth and pleasurable drive good for cruising town (perhaps Rodeo Drive).  In this mode the Lambo’s torque is split 40/60 to achieve maximum comfort and control. For a more exhilarating drive, flip the switch to the Sport mode which will shift 90% of the torque to the wide rear wheels. Corsa mode is the Aventador’s balls-to-the-wall mode to be used strictly on the track.  Perhaps the best Aventador S driving mode of all though is the EGO mode. This mode allows you to manually configure traction, steering and suspension settings depending on your preference.

Performance Statistics and Fuel Consumption

The Lamborghini Aventador S lives up to its supercar reputation with a sprint to 60 mph in a mere 2.9 seconds on its way to a 217 mph top speed.  The Lamborghini’s remarkable acceleration is owed in part to its spectacular highly responsive and lightweight Independent Shifting Rod (ISR) 7-speed shifting system.  Besides boasting a powerful drive, the 2018 Lamborghini Aventador S is fuel efficient as well thanks to its stop-and-start system and cylinder deactivation technology. This system temporarily deactivates six out of twelve cylinders during certain driving conditions to maximize efficiency and reduce fuel consumption.

Interior Comfort

On the inside, you may not be expecting high-end luxury equipment, since supercars like these focus on keeping the weight to a minimum for max performance. Nevertheless, the Aventador S offers some top-class features starting with an all-new digital instrument cluster, which can be customized according to the personal preference. The TFT display shows vital information regarding the selected drive mode. The EGO mode can be adjusted through this display. Smartphone connectivity is possible through Apple CarPlay, although unfortunately Android phones are not supported. Oh, and you can enjoy a hands-free experience, as nearly everything can be controlled inside through voice commands. The upholstery is the same you find in the previous models, but can be customized through Lamborghini’s Ad Personam customization program, depending on how much cash you’re willing to part with.

The standard safety features include ABS, stability control, front impact airbags, side impact airbags, knee airbags, seatbelt pretensioners and an anti-theft security system.

Conclusion and Pricing

The 2018 Lamborghini Aventador S is a car that you expect to “wow” you.  Even with high expectations, this Italian stallion seems to exceed them as it does not lack in any department; be it interior, exterior, powertrain or performance, you get exactly what you want in a supercar.  As supercars go, this is certainly one of the best money can buy, provided you have deep enough pockets to procure it.  In the U.S., the 2018 Lamborghini Aventador S can be yours for as “little” as $421,350 (suggested retail price – GGT included).
