Some serious upgrades to this awesome 1969 Chevelle Convertible were recently completed by Manns Restoration, in Festus, MO. The customer brought the car in to have a Vintage Air unit installed, along with a couple other things. When they started looking more closely at the car, they realized that the big-block that was in the car was not in very good shape. The decision was made to replace it with a LSX 454 from Don Hardy Racing Engines. It’s a high-compression, naturally aspirated engine, topped with ultra-efficient, custom ported 12 degree heads and an 8 Stack injection setup from Inglese. It’s pushing 720 plus horsepower through a Tremec TKO 600 five-speed, back to a Ford 9 inch rear. We decided to take it to Bonne Terre Drag Strip, for a tuning session. It really has too much power for the street tires, but it sure makes it a blast to drive. While they had the car, they also installed the Vintage Air unit and a full set of custom gauges. It’s also riding on a full Roadster Shop chassis, with Wilwood Disc brakes all around. This car is ready for anything. It accelerates, handles, rides, and stops, like a modern high-performance car. You can drive it to the strip, getting pretty remarkable mileage along the way, and then take it out for dinner afterwards. It’s amazing these days, that you truly can have a 700 plus horsepower, naturally aspirated, daily driver.
